About 3 years ago the husband and I started making lists in December- we don’t really call them anything special, but if they had a name, they’d be yearlists.
We talk about how the year went and what we want to accomplish in the next year. Our first year doing the list it was long- we had a lot of bills that we wanted to try and pay off. Our 2013 list (if I remember correctly) was short and sweet:
– Pay off Chase card
– Pay off C.J’s birth bill
– Go on a beach vacation
Done, done, and done. By the grace of the freelance writing gods I was able to pick up a lot of gigs to help pay these bills off and we were able to go to Florida in December.
Usually, there are 2 lists- our husband and wife list, then my personal list. My 2013 list was long and I didn’t really conquer 1/2 of them, and this year I wanted to think long and hard about things that I wanted to do. As I made my list the one thing that truly stood out to me was:
“treat yourself more”
I tend not to do that. I often skip on getting my hair done or pass on my eyebrows because I don’t think I should be spending money on me- it could easily go to something more important I often think. The husband always tells me to go, but I just say no, no, no. I’m so worried about taking care of everyone else that I forget about me. For my sanity- sometimes I need to make sure I treat myself. Whether it’s to that Starbuck’s or a pedicure or a massage after running hard.
It’s not like they’re resolutions, because we won’t be all bummed out if we don’t check things off of the list. Truthfully, we never really look at the list again until December. I think it’s just more of a reflective piece for us- what do we want to do differently next year?
My 2014 list includes things like:
– Run a 5K
– Run a 1/2
– Read more books
– Treat myself more
And there are other things, but I think these four are the most important to me because they all involve real changes that I want to make for myself.
