I have questions about Santa.
I mean, we all know that Santa is white- it’s a verifiable fact. Megyn Kelly said so. (K, let me stop now)
But that’s not what this is about.
My friend Kristen asked her readers whether or not gifts from Santa came wrapped or unwrapped and I was kind of thrown off by this question. Aren’t gifts always wrapped? No matter who gives them? Well, Kristen received a myriad of answers and that made me think- is there a method to this Santa thing?
I grew up knowing that Santa was not real. I’m not sure if there was ever a time that I thought he was real. My dad doesn’t celebrate Christmas, he gave us money to get what we wanted and my mom was very clear in that she worked hard to get the money to buy our gifts. And logically, that made sense to me. I never questioned anything else. Also? We lived in an apartment building in Brooklyn with burglar bars on the window, so I always wondered, if Santa was real- how would he get in my house? We didn’t have a chimney. But, I digress.
Pea really believes in Santa. Her imagination is very active- she loves all things mystical and whimsical. The other day we were at a Christmas thing where she got to make crafts and take her picture with Santa and some little boy was saying that the guy taking pictures with kids isn’t the real Santa because Santa isn’t real.
The sadness that emerged in Pea’s face could not be duplicated. As she colored her Christmas craft, she started whispering things like “but he is real” and “that is Santa.” I almost punched that little kid in the face. When they left the table, she looked at me and asked “Mom, is that the real Santa?” I told her “of course it is!” She perked up with a big smile and asked “but where’s his sled?” To which I replied “on the roof, of course.” She slapped her head in the forehead and said “that’s right! Santa parks his sled on the roof, I thought he parked it on the street.“ And that was that- crisis averted. Santa is still real and all is well with the world.
This is the first year we’ve played into the Santa game- last year, she never really mentioned him- and so I want to know- how do you do Santa?
Are your gifts from him wrapped or unwrapped?
Do you guys set out food the night before? For Santa? How about his reindeer?
I know lots of people do Elf on the Shelf- I have to draw the line there. That creepy little guy looks like he came right out of the movie Chucky. I can’t have that.
School me on this Santa thing. I want to make sure I do it “right.” For Pea’s sake.
